A Midsummer Night's Dream
by William Shakespeare
For the next several weeks you will be reading, analyzing, and studying one of Shakespeare's funniest and lighthearted works. The most difficult challenge for you is that you will be reading a play that was meant to be watched. To overcome this, I will give you access to several screen adaptations. As well, I have a variety of resources and notes that will help you in your study and decoding of the traditional English language.
Before you begin reading, please know that there will be times where the language is overwhelming and even confusing. Before you get frustrated, try to understand character, plot, and theme...and do remember to enjoy those moments that offer clarity. In other words, if you enjoy the work as a whole and enjoy the fluidity of the language, you will enjoy Shakespeare much more. Keep in mind that even veteran teachers who have taught this play for 20 years learn or appreciate something new from it each time they read it. Therefore relax, enjoy, and try to soak up the beauty of Shakespeare. Remember that when you hit a roadblock, please see Mr. Di Ponio for assistance.
