Hamlet
by William Shakespeare
"To be or not to be, that is the question." Undoubtedly you have heard this line which is probably the most famous of all Shakespeare quotes. Do you know what Hamlet is talking about? Well the joy of this play, like any great piece of literature, is that it is open to interpretation. For the next 6 weeks you will be reading, analyzing and studying the most popular of Shakespeare's work. The challenge for you is that you may be reading a play to yourself which was meant to be seen on the stage. To overcome this, I will give you access to several screen adaptations. As well, I have a variety of resources and notes that will help you in your study and decoding of the traditional English language.
And now to Shakespeare. There may be times where the language is overwhelming and even confusing. Before you get frustrated, try to understand character, plot, and theme and enjoy those moments that offer clarity. In other words, if you enjoy the work as a whole and enjoy the fluidity of the language, you will enjoy Shakespeare much more. Keep in mind that even veteran teachers who have taught Hamlet for 20 years get something from it each time they read it. Therefore relax, enjoy, and try to soak up the beauty of Shakespeare. Yes there will be confusing moments, but do not let this get you down. Remember that when you hit a road block, please see me, Mr. Di Ponio for help.
