Julius Caesar
by William Shakespeare
For the next several weeks you will be reading, analyzing and studying one of the most popular of Shakespeare's work. The challenge for you is that you will be reading a play that was written to be watched. To overcome this, I will give you access to several screen adaptations. As well, I have a variety of resources and notes that will help you in your study and decoding of the traditional English language.
Before you begin reading, please know that there will be times where the language is overwhelming and even confusing. Before you get frustrated, try to understand character, plot, and theme. And do remember to enjoy those moments that offer clarity. In other words, if you enjoy the work as a whole and enjoy the fluidity of the language, you will enjoy Shakespeare much more. Keep in mind that even veteran teachers who have taught this play for 20 years get something from it each time they read it. Therefore relax, enjoy, and try to soak up the beauty of Shakespeare. Also, make sure that you have your poetry terms handout from the Poetry 10 unit as you will be identifying many devices in this work. Remember that when you hit a roadblock, please see Mr. Di Ponio for assistance.
