Macbeth
by William Shakespeare
"Fair is foul, and foul is fair." You may have heard this line, arguably the most famous from Shakespeare's Macbeth. Do you know what is happening at this point in the play? Well the joy of this play, like any great piece of literature, is that it is open to interpretation. For the next several weeks you will be reading, analyzing, and studying the most popular of Shakespeare's work. The challenge for you is that you will be reading a play which was meant to be watched on the stage. To overcome this, I will give you access to several screen adaptations, as well as a variety of resources and notes that will help you in your study and decoding of the traditional English language.
And now to Shakespeare...there may be times where the language is overwhelming and even confusing. Before you get frustrated, try to understand character, plot, and theme, and enjoy those moments that offer clarity. In other words, if you enjoy the work as a whole and enjoy the fluidity of the language, you will enjoy Shakespeare much more. Keep in mind that even veteran teachers who have taught Macbeth for 20 years glean something new from it each time they read it. Therefore, relax and enjoy and try to soak up the beauty of Shakespeare. Remember that when you hit a road block, please see me, Mr. Di Ponio.
