Information about Starworks
Starworks is an opportunity for individualized, self-paced learning. Students will follow the same curriculum and write the same final exam as those in regular classes, but some of the activities will differ. Each unit consists of a number of assignments, followed by a major test or project. There are also several larger assignments and essays.
Regular attendance is an expectation unless special arrangements have been made by the teacher and student, and approved by a parent/guardian and counselor. In most cases, students will come to class on a daily basis, and a teacher will always be available for assistance and guidance. However, the program lends itself well to more flexible timetabling, and athletes, fine arts performers, or students with medical or personal issues may wish to design a part-time schedule that allows them to pursue other activities. Some students take Starworks courses completely outside the timetable, where they are enrolled in the course but work at home or on their own time, and only come into class to submit assignments and write tests. This arrangement must be approved by both the parent and counselor.
Organization and self-discipline are essential for success in a self-paced class. Suggested timelines will be provided for each unit, and it is strongly recommend that you try to follow the proposed schedule as closely as possible. If you fall behind and appear unwilling or unable to work productively in a self-paced setting, you may be asked to transfer to a regular class setting.
